How to Care for Auto Glass

Keeping your vehicle's auto glass in good condition is important if you're trying to keep your vehicle looking great, but it is critical to for safe driving conditions. If your car's windows are dirty or suffer from cracks and or other damage it can hinder your ability to see out of the car. Not being able to see well can cause accidents, which is why glass care is an integral part of auto maintenance. Here are our tips for keeping your car's glass clear and clean.

You should clean the glass on an as needed basis. If it appears there is a dust or other debris covering on the interior or exterior of the windshield or other glass be sure to clean it before you drive.

When cleaning interior auto glass you are dealing with different sorts of materials then what is on the outside. There is commonly bodily oils from people touching the windows, smoke residue and moisture from normal breathing. To clean the glass use a specified auto glass cleaner and use two microfiber towels. Spray the glass cleaner on and use the first towel to spread it. The second towel should be used to wipe the glass to a streak free clean. Be sure not to use too much cleaner, as this can leave a residue if not cleaned correctly. Be sure to clean every inch of the glass, as missed spots will surely be a sore sight once you get in your car to drive. Roll down windows a few inches to be able to cleanly clean the top of the glass.

Exterior auto glass is subject to much dirt and debris. While a the process for a basic cleaning of the glass is similar to cleaning the interior there are a few extra steps that you can take for a deeper clean. There are clay bars available that can remove contaminates stuck in the glass' microscopic pores.

Once the glass is clean and clear you can use a sealant to protect it from dirt, water marks and help with glass performance in the rain. There are spray on or gel based products available to perform this task.

Be sure not to clean glass in direct sunlight or when it is warm to the touch. If your glass has rock chips, cracks or is otherwise broken be sure to replace it so the problem does not get worse.
