How does Windshield Rock Chip or Crack Repair Work?

Rock chips, cracks and other nicks to your windshield glass can not only be unsightly, but dangerous. If they are in your field of vision as the driver they can prove to be distracting or distort your vision. These minor bruises to the windshield can also crack, resulting in major damage, if they are not fixed right away. If you've suffered some form of windshield damage be sure to contact a professional auto glass repair shop to find out if your windshield can be repaired, without having to be replaced.

What is Windshield Repair?

When an auto glass technician is conducting windshield repairs they are basically filling in the damaged area with a specialized gel like fluid. This clear adhesive resin is injected into the broken portion of the windshield, whether that is a small crack or a rock chip, where it begins to fill the voids between the glass. Once the damaged area is filled in the tech wipes the area clean and the then will use a UV light in order to cure the resin. The process often takes no more than 15 minutes and leaves the vehicle with a structurally restored windshield. While the repair may not be able to completely reverse the visible damage it does reduce distortion that the driver may experience when looking out of the front window.

What Sorts of Windshield Damage can be Fixed?

In most scenarios rock chips up to the size of a US 50 cent piece can be repaired. If your car or truck suffers from a crack there is a good chance it can also be repaired, as long as it is no more than about two feet long. However the location of the crack or chip may affect the choice of whether to repair or replace the windshield, as some damage will likely leave too much of a visual distraction for the driver if it's in the wrong spot.

Why Should I have the Windshield Repaired?

There are many reasons you will want to have the windshield repaired after it suffers damage, but one of the main reasons is that in many places it is the law that you must have a clear view out of your windshield that is not hindered by any sort of cracking, chipping or other damage. Other reasons you will want to fix the windshield is because it is a safety concern not to. Windshield repair restores the structural integrity of the glass and stops the existing damage from spreading. Alas, repairing windshields is the green thing to do as many types of auto glass can not be recycled due to the lamanite used to keep them from shattering during a collision.

If you have suffered from windshield damage be sure to have a professional auto glass repair shop give it a look to let you know if replacement or repair is a better option.
