Busted Windshield - Repair or Replace?

Busted Windshield - Repair or Replace?Have you ever jumped behind the wheel only to notice a rock chip or small crack in the windshield that you swear was never there before. It really seems like these issues appear out of nowhere sometimes. Unfortunately, these things happen, but if there is any saving grace it is that it can likely be repaired versus doing a full replacement, as long as the damage isn't too great. The ability to fix the windshield versus replacing it depends on a few factors, but one thing is for sure, it is important to take care of the damage before it spreads and gets worse. So will you car need a windshield replacement or repair? There's two primary factors to consider when trying to answer this question.

Location of windshield cracked

The worst chips and cracks are the ones that are directly in the line of sight for the driver when they stare straight ahead. As glass is repaired it can leave small distortions that may be distracting to a driver. If a crack or chip is in front of the steering wheel, it is likely a better idea to replace the whole windshield to eliminate these distractions. Cracks that appear along the outer rim of the windshield will also warrant windshield replacement because they tend to spread faster, which could cause major problems across the whole windshield.

How big is the windshield crack?

The other determining factor is the size of the windshield damage. Most auto glass repair shops can fix chips up to the size of a quarter and cracks that are no more than three inches long. Most places will advise you to purchase a new windshield if the windshield crack is any longer than that because available repair techniques may not be suitable for these larger issues. There are some ways to fix windshield cracks up to 12 inches but it may leave odd distortions in the windshield.

Windshields crack for many reasons, from rocks being kicked up by vehicles in front of us, sudden changes in temperature and air pressure, or from motor vehicle accidents requiring major auto body repair. Regardless of the size or location of the damage to the windshield, it is important to have it repaired or replaced by an expert auto glass repair center.
