Windshield Damage: Replacement or Repair?

SMACK! Nothing will snap your eyes open like a rock pinging off the windshield. Even a slight graze of some road debris can cause quite a loud bang as it comes into contact with the front window of your vehicle. Fortunately many pebbles will simply bounce off the glass, leaving no visible damage. On the other hand your vehicle may need to be awarded a purple heart after a run in with a rock or some other object that may have been bouncing around the roadway. Should your car fall victim to some sort of damage you will want to visit an auto glass repair center to figure out what the best option is to reverse the damage.

What causes windshield damage?

In most cases windshield damage is caused by a rock or pebble kicked up by the tire of a vehicle in front of you. The impact can leave your car with chips, cracks or in rare cases, the absolute spidering of the windshield. The latter generally only happens when a heavy object makes contact with the glass. There are other things that can cause the windshield to crack. Rapid changes in air pressure or temperature can have adverse effects on the glass. However, this usually wonít cause them to crack unless there is some sort of other pressure present. This is why you should never push on the windshield!

Why fix windshield damage?

Cracks and chips can impair the ability of the driver to see clearly out of the windshield. In some cases, if the damage is bad enough or falls directly in the driverís line of sight, it may be illegal to drive.

Should the windshield be replaced or can it be repaired

Whether or not the windshield can be repaired or if it needs to be fixed will depend on the type of damage that it has suffered. In many cases a rock chip that is the size of a quarter or smaller can be repaired. This is also true for single cracks that are no longer than three inches in length. However, not all damage is created the same so it is important that a professional auto glass repair technician evaluates the damage. Larger issues, such as spidering or if the windshield is leaking, either through the glass or its seal, will require the windshield to be replaced completely.
