Should You Repair or Replace a Cracked Windshield?

Should You Repair or Replace a Cracked Windshield?Seeing even a tiny pebble coming at your windshield as you drive down the street seems to slow down time. It's unavoidable and in that split second we prepare for the worst possible windshield damage. In the end it usually ends up being just a tiny knick in the glass. Depending on the size of the rock or other item that gave your windshield a purple heart you probably have some damage ranging from a small chip the size of a dime to a spider cracked windshield that you can no longer see out of safely. Depending on a few factors your windshield may be able to be repaired, saving your the cost of a complete windshield replacement. To assess whether you need a windshield replacement or repair the location and size of the damage must be considered.

Where is the windshield crack?

When glass is repaired it can leave slight waves in the glass that may be distracting to a driver if it is in their line of sight. If a crack or chip is directly in front of the steering wheel, it may be a good idea to install a new windshield to avoid these distortions. Also, if the crack or chip appeared along the outer rim of the windshield you will likely need to replace it because these cracks tend to spread quickly, which could compromise the structural integrity of the windshield. If it isn't in the line of sight and somewhere away from the edge, there is a good chance it can be repaired, as long as it isn't too big.

How big is the windshield crack?

One of the main determining factors is the size of the damage on the glass. Most auto glass repair shops can fix rock dings and chips up to the size of a quarter and cracks three inches long or less. Most repair shops will advise you to install a new windshield if the damage is any larger than those specifications. However, advanced glass repair technologies allow some cracks up to one foot long to be repaired without having to purchase a new windshield. But again, it depends on the location of the crack or chip.

Regardless of the size or location of the damage, a busted windshield should be replaced or repaired right away so the damage doesn't get worse. In some places it is even illegal to have a cracked windshield because of the hazardous driving conditions it can cause.
