Determining the Best Repair Method for your Damage Windshield

Determining the Best Repair Method for your Damage WindshieldWindshield damage can happen in an instant. While it may be obvious that some windshield damage will ultimately require a whole new replacement, other times you may be able to repair the crack or chip, saving yourself the cost of a brand new windshield. Either way, pebbles and other small debris that strike your window will likely leave a mark that will ultimately need attention. So how can you tell if the damage your windshield sustained is repairable or not? Well, it depends on two things, size and location.

How big is the windshield crack?

The size of the damage can quickly write off repair options if it exceeds certain dimensions. Most auto glass repair shops can fix rock chips up to the size of a quarter and cracks up to about three inches. While some cracks longer than that can be repaired with advanced glass repair technologies it may still be advisable to take the route that includes a new windshield. This is because glass repair can leave a distortion in the glass which makes seeing out of the windshield difficult. For this reason the location of the damage also plays a factor in determining if a windshield can be repaired or not.

Where is the windshield cracked?

Filling chips and cracks can leave waves in the glass that may be distracting to a driver if they are in their direct line of sight. If a crack or chip is in front of the steering wheel a glass repair shop may suggest replacing the whole windshield because of safe sight concerns. Cracks along the outside rim of the windshield will likely require a replacement as well because they tend to spread quickly as temperature drops and rises and glass adjusts to current conditions. The spreading of these cracks can compromise the integrity of the windshield and cause them to shatter in the event of an accident.

Regardless of the size or location of the damage to the windshield it's important that the damage is assessed and taken care of before it can spread.
