What Causes Windshield Damage?
Have you ever gone out to your car in the morning and noticed a crack or chip in the windshield that you swear wasn't there when you parked your car? Well it isn't just rocks kicked up by vehicles that can cause damage to auto glass. Let's take a bit of a closer look at what can cause damage to windshields.
Probably the most obvious way a windshield will become damage is if the car traveling in front of you kicks up gravel or a rock that then becomes a projectile headed straight for your windshield. This will often times cause an immediate chip in the windshield and sometimes result in a large crack, depending on the type of impact and size of the object that hit the window. Many times small rock chips can be repaired, but this should be done immediately in order to preven the damage from spreading.
Another common reason windshields become damaged is precipitation. Hail can cause major havoc for vehicles, and not just the glass, as it may end up causing a multitude of dings and dents across the body. In a hail storm that has hail large enough to cause damage to the windshield there is a good chance that you will end up needing a complete windshield replacement due to the widespread damage.
Sudden Temperature Change
A major and sudden change in air temperature and pressure can cause a windshield to crack. This is especially true if the vehicle is subjected to extreme cold. Moisture can cause cracks in a windshield very quickly and the expansion and contraction of the glass as the air warms and cools allows moisture into the microscopic pores of the glass. When it freezes and the moisture turns to ice it can cause cracking in the windshield. This is often times the reason you'll find cracking that wasn't there the day before.
The process of creating windshields has yet to be perfected and the way it is most commonly done usually leaves weak spots in the glass. These spots are most often found within inches of the outer edge of the windshield. If you end up with a lemon of windshield even a bad bump or excessive pressure on the windshield (don't put your hands on the glass!) could cause it to crack.
Regardless of what has caused the windshield damage to your car it is imperative you have it repaired to ensure a safe and legal ride.
