Preparing your Car for Winter
As we head in to December it is important to get your car ready for the coldest of cold. While the Midwest and East Coast may be suffering from some shockingly low temperatures and snow storms, here in the Pacific Northwest our temperatures drop too and the chance of snow is never far off. To get your vehicle road ready this winter be sure to take care of a few minor things.
Check Your Tires - Are your tires all weather? Do they have enough traction on them? Is there any cracked or bubbling rubber?
Scheduled Maintenance - If your vehicle is due for any scheduled maintenance have it completed before the cold really sets it.
Current Problems - The cold temperatures really have a way of exacerbating current vehicle issues, making hard starts harder and rough idles rougher.
Fluid Check - Make sure your vehicle has sufficient antifreeze, automatic transmission fluid, brake fluid and power steering fluid, and be sure you're not due for a fluid flush for any of these.
Battery Check - Is your battery in good shape? Check the connections to ensure there is no dirt or corrosion around the terminals. Just in case, be sure to throw some jumper cables in the trunk!
Chains - If you're going to be driving and there is any chance of snow it is always a good idea to carry tire chains.
Brakes - Have you been having issues with the brakes lately such as grinding or squealing? Get to the mechanic to ensure optimal brake power.
Lights - Be sure your headlights and all other interior and exterior lights are working properly for ultimate safety.
Windshield & Glass - Are there any cracks or chips in your windshield, rear windshield or side windows? If so have them replaced as changes in temperature can cause the damage to spread rapidly.
